Diane Cheung is a sound designer and composer who has spent fifteen years creating sonic environments for theatre that function less as background and more as a kind of underscore to the emotional life of a play. She studied electroacoustic composition at Concordia University in Montreal before relocating to Toronto, where she has worked steadily in both the independent and mainstage sectors. Her designs are notable for their subtlety and precision: sound that audiences may not consciously notice but would immediately miss. She has designed for the Factory Theatre, Buddies in Bad Times, the Young Centre for the Performing Arts, and the National Theatre School. She is currently developing an original music-theatre piece, co-created with playwright Yvette Nolan, which will premiere at the Tarragon in the spring season.
