Miriam Houle trained in fashion design at Ryerson University before a chance encounter with a costume shop at Theatre Passe Muraille redirected her career entirely. She has since designed costumes for more than sixty productions across Canada and has developed a particular expertise in clothing that tells a class story — garments that reveal economic circumstances, aspiration, and wear without announcing themselves. Her work on Walker plays has been described by critics as essential, using the specificity of working-class East End dress to locate characters precisely in their world. She has received three Ember Awards for Outstanding Costume Design and is currently a sessional instructor at the Sheridan College Theatre Arts program.
